The Theory Test: Forty Questions, Thirty-Five To Pass
Ask any taxi driver how far a car travels before it stops on a wet night coming down toward the Halfway House, and he will not guess, he will know. The theory test asks you the same sort of thing, and the people who breeze in certain of themselves are the ones who walk out short.
Forty questions, multiple choice, on a screen at a test centre. You need thirty-five right. Get it and you get a cert that lets you apply for your learner permit. That is the whole transaction.
What it asks
Rules of the road, road signs, safe driving, and a decent slice of hazard awareness. Most of it is common sense once you have read the material. The bit that trips people is the numbers. Stopping distances, speed limits, who has priority where. People who already drive assume they know this stuff by feel, then discover that feel and the correct answer are two different things, the same way the road on the map and the road at half four are two different roads.
Where the cocky ones fall
Stopping distances. Every single time. Somebody who has been a passenger their whole life reckons they know how long a car takes to pull up, guesses, and gets it wrong across four questions in a row. The material gives you the actual figures. Learn them as figures, not as a rough feeling, because on a wet road that rough feeling is exactly what shunts you into the car in front. The test does not accept nearly.

The subscription trap
The cert is valid for two years. Plenty of people pass it, then do nothing, let it lapse, sit it again, let that one lapse too, and treat the whole thing as a rolling subscription they keep paying into for no reason. The state is grand with that. It takes the fee either way. Do not be that person. Pass it when you are actually ready to get moving, then use it well before the clock runs out.
How to prepare
Read the official material, do the practice questions until the numbers stop surprising you, and pay real attention to the ones you get wrong rather than the ones you already know. An app is grand for drilling on the bus. It is not a substitute for reading the rules of the road once, properly, the way they are actually written down.
There are a thousand blogs telling you the theory test is easy, just download the app. It is not hard, true enough. But easy and free to fail are two different things, and the stopping-distance questions do not care how confident you felt walking in.
